Snowdogs, DNA Doll

W14 Club, London - Thursday 1st November 2001

Time to lose my W14 virginity tonight at the night promoted by our good friends from Inhale. They're first up tonight and keep getting better with each show. I'll apologise for not been au fait with the song titles (I hate reviewers putting incorrect titles in reviews) but opener 'Slip Away' sounded superb. Worth catching if you can - especially so on the 17th November at The Borderline. (SHAMELESS PLUG!!!)

Next up are DNA Doll, a band that Sean Worrall (Organ - if you don't know who he is then why not?) has been fawning over recently, and one that I happily admit to liking a lot. But tonight? Bad first time to see them live methinks. The songs were good enough with 'Newagespeedpeople' and 'Nostalgia Addict' sounding as good live as on record but no 'Glamma Glue Girl' or 'Happy Valley', which are by a million miles their best songs? Bad move, and this is exacerbated by what seems to be a level of disinterest from the band. Or maybe they're just being cool. The new bassist Vicky is doing the typical ice maiden girl bass player thang (GODDAMMIT LOOK INTERESTED WOMAN!), and the set just doesn't grab me like I thought it would. I severly hope this was an off night.

Snowdogs ARE an off night. I will nail my colours to the mast. I HATE THIS BAND. I've worked with them before and they were pretentious arrogant wankers. Luckily their brand of seen-it-before, done-it-before, pissed-all-over-it-before, boring as bollocks US Punk-lite shite allows me to carry on hating them. The bassist looks like he wants to be Sid Vicious but can't even muster a Mike Dirnt. The level of applause afforded the opening two bands notably dies during Snowdogs. A boil on the scraggy arse of what is a otherwise bloody good bill.

Bloody good is a phrase that often pops up when mentioning Plan A. Fresh from a rather strange review in Kerrang!, Jef and the rest of the mob take to the stage and crash straight into a set full of the songs we've come to know and love 'Moving Along', 'Rum Cove', 'S&A', 'Junkie Man', 'Alright Jack' and 'New Cute Song' are all correct and present, however Paul's vocals are unfortunately lost deep within the mix but hey ho, that's rock and roll. Speaking of which, we are treated to the fastest ever version of 'Hey Ho' tonight. It was at least at double (possibly triple) speed after Jef dared the crowd that they wouldn't be able to keep up with the band. The set ends with Gary's drums all over the stage and Paul lying where the drums should have been, and Inhale starting a mosh pit. Every effort of Mark's to keep things upright failed miserably. Note - over-zealous drummers have a tendency to knock things over deliberately - watch out for them.

Another great show by the lads and I would really recommend going to see them at The Borderline on December 1st (SHAMELESS PLUG NUMERO DOS!!!)
