NEIL LEYTON Down Secret Avenue With The
Last Lovers (Fading Ways)
Oh, if only this were released in the U.K. Then those Brits would be
singing the praises of Secret Avenue. Indie artist Neil Leyton
(ex-Conscience Pilate) has put together 13 songs with some of the most
delicious Brit-Pop melodies ever. Leyton's Brett Anderson-like voice -
with its high octave tones - brings a soft urgency to most of the tunes.
There aren't any hot singles on this debut, but sweet and catchy ditties
like "A Little Light" and "Fires Of The Heart" make it a pleasant
experience. The twinkling swells of the organ playing are a nice touch,
too. This isn't beginner's luck, since Leyton's been playing in the
Toronto music scene for some time now, but it'd be really nice if
someone made him famous soon. - Debbie Bento
